walking the labyrinth:
a liminal journey

Our lives are a sacred journey. We encounter joy, sorrow, growth, defeat, grief, celebration and many other experiences that challenge and transform our understanding of life. Symbolic of this journey, the labyrinth can help us encounter the presence of the sacred in our changing lives. Labyrinths can be walked, or traced during a seated meditation. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has no dead ends, and there are no tricks or puzzles to be solved. The path in … is the path out … and as such represents the wholeness of our lives. The journey can take us inward to our center and then back out into the world with new insights into ourselves and the divine presence in our lives.

Liminality comes from the Latin līmen, meaning ‘threshold.’ In its literal sense, a threshold is a doorway. So liminality is the threshold, or gateway, between two stages and in that space lies tremendous wisdom.

“The essence of life takes place in the neutral zone phase of transition. It is in that interim spaciousness that all possibilities, creativity and innovative ideas can come to life and flourish.”
